This pattern was originally called "shiho", meaning "four directions" or "four paths", but over time evolved into "shippo", which refers to the seven treasures of Buddhism (gold, silver, lapis, crystal, agate, pearl and carnelian). This change makes about as much sense as a Buddhist having treasure.
